founder, Nathan Thomas Carl
, fell in love with photography while serving as a Photographers Mate (PH) and Salvage Diver (ND) in the U.S. Navy. His additional passions for surfing and traveling to exotic places allowed him to hon his camera skills by shooting a variety of unique cultures in arduous locations. The love for photography adopted cinematography while serving a three-year tour at the Ford Island U.S. Navy Dive School where he began making short documentaries on the student classes that were passing through the school house. As time went on living in Hawaii, he was invited to an AccesSurf
event which radically changed his life. AccesSurf empowers people with disabilities by providing adaptive surfing instruction and therapeutic educational programs in water recreation, enriching lives by assisting families to access the beach and ocean in a barrier free environment. Being a Christian, Nathan realized that serving one another is the foundation and a basic fundamental of being “Christ-like”. He became a full-time volunteer for AccesSurf and donated his camera work by shooting their events. During this time, FM began to evolve with getting his closest and like-minded friends involved; Steven Legate
, the Animation expert, Richard Dandeneau, the logistics manager, Tommy Chorman, the PR pro, and graphic/web designer Brent Keane
Since beginning on the beaches in Hawaii, the team has traveled and filmed venues around the globe: Australia, California, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Fiji, Guatemala, Mexico and the Outer Banks. Experiencing the various cultures from their globe-trotting, the team united ideas, further amplifying the foundation of the company. The team then trademarked a successful clothing and surf accessory line called, Freedom Riding, which was sold in numerous shops in Hawaii, New York and Costa Rica.As it is said, the rest is history, which they will continue to document.
“But now, O Lord, You are our Father,
We are the clay, and You our potter;
And all of us are the work of Your hand.”
